Modern Twist on a Hot Toddy

How to make it modern…

Ohhh, the weather outside is getting frightful—but a soothing Hot Toddy in your hands is sooooo delightful!

Hot Toddies may be old-fashioned, but I think it’s time to revive the ol’ recipe and bring it into this century with natural, organic and holistic essential oils!

What you’ll need:

  • 1.5 or 2 oz. Whiskey—yes…any kind will do

  • 1 Tbs. Local honey (for best health benefits, use raw local honey)

  • 1-2 drops Cinnamon bark essential oil -OR- 1-2 Cinnamon sticks.

  • 3-6 drops Lemon essential oil, -OR- a freshly squeezed lemon.

  • 1 Tbs. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV – has amazing health benefits!)

  • Other essential oils you can add: use 1 drop to taste Ginger and/or Clove and/or Star Anise.

  • Tea kettle for 8 oz. boiling water.

  • Your favorite mug.

  • Alternatives: don’t like alcohol? No worries, steep two bags of your fav non-caffeinated tea. I like Pukka with chamomile, Manila honey and vanilla.

Now that you’ve got what you need, let’s get down to business…

  • Start your water boiling in your tea kettle, first. (I must admit I don’t have a tea kettle so I use the microwave or boil water in a pan).

  • Next, pour whiskey and ACV into your mug. (Don’t have a jigger to measure a true once? Use a regular shot glass. Shot glasses are generally 1 oz. so measure 1-2 shot glasses of whiskey. What? No Shot Glass? No Problem! An ounce of liquid is 6 tsp.)

  • Then, add in one or two drops of cinnamon oil or 1-2 cinnamon sticks. You can also add ONE DROP each of ginger, clove, and/or star anise to taste. I emphasize one drop because these are usually very potent oils and they all contain a lot of spice.

  • Add 6 drops of lemon oil or 2-4 freshly squeezed lemon slices.

  • Next up, add in your raw local honey. I like to use a heaping tablespoon! Be sure to use true raw, locally-sourced honey so not only are you sweetening your drink, but you are also giving your body many health benefits! The warm local honey helps fight off those nasty allergies and soothes your throat.

  • By now, your hot water should be ready. Pour the water over the top of all of your ingredients. Stir. Stir. Stir.

  • Let it sit for a minute until you can comfortably wrap your hands around your mug. And enjoy! **Be sure to warm it up here and there if your drink gets too cold.
