PB & Sweet Potato Pretzel Dog Treats
A dog’s dream—Peanut Butter and Sweet Potato Treats
When I was spring cleaning my pet pantry, I thought about what “clean” treat I can make for my fur babies to celebrate a clean pet pantry. I usually make this treat in the fall since it’s sweet potato based. But, I really want to spoil Mercedes and Zsa-Zsa with something special. I hope your fur baby enjoys these, too!
Level: Easy
Total: 50 min
Active: 35 min
Yield: 8 to 10 servings
Ingredients
3/4 cup mashed Sweet Potatoes (I used canned) *
1 extra large egg
1/4 cup peanut butter
2 cups almond flour **
1/4 cup almond flour, if needed
Directions
Preheat the oven to 375˚. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Beat the pumpkin puree, eggs and peanut butter in a large bowl with a mixer on medium-high speed until well combined. Gradually beat in the flour until a stiff dough forms.
Scoop out a baseball-size ball of dough and roll into an 18-inch-long rope. Form into a U shape, then cross the ends and press them against the bottom of the U. Transfer to the prepared pan. Repeat to make 8 to 10 pretzels.
For a crispier treats, bake until the pretzels are golden brown, 12 to 16 minutes. For softer dog treats, bake for 10-12 minutes. Let cool on the baking sheet. Treats should be soft and dense in the center while crunchy on the outside.
Store in air tight container in refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
* You can swap out sweet potatoes with pumpkin puree.
** What’s great about this recipe is that I’m not limited to just Almond flour. Other flours that are good for this recipe: Chickpea, Coconut, Quinoa or Oat.
Trouble Shooting :
Any baked good that uses flour no matter if it has Gluten or is Gluten-free, can be fussy depending on weather, location, how big your egg is, how wet the puree is, etc. So, here's some tips: Any dough that is ready to bake should smooth and pliable. If dough is dry or gritty, add a little sprits of water until it becomes smooth and pliable. If the dough is sticky, add a little of flour at a time until the dough is no longer sticky. Try not to overwork the dough. When dough is smooth and pliable, stop mixing at once and let the dough rest for a few minutes covered with a damp paper towel. Only work with a portion of the dough at a time so the dough doesn't dry out.
